This summer I wanted to try something new that we haven’t had before.

I went to my local farm stand and bought flats of our favorite berries and produce, so I found myself with an abundance of blackberries. We also had a basket full of apples that no one was touching since our berry choosing was plentiful.

I wanted to make a fruit crisp and we love my apple crisp recipe, so I decided we would make a Blackberry Apple Crumble!

What is Blackberry Apple Crumble?

Crumbles originated in Britain and were initially called “crisps” in America. The name “crumble” comes from the crumbly texture of the buttery, sweet topping.

The combination of blackberries and apples in a crumble creates a delightful balance of tartness and sweetness. The apples add natural sweetness while the blackberries add a tangy and slightly tart flavor.

The crumble topping typically consists of flour, butter, and sugar. It’s known for its irresistible texture and golden-brown finish.

The sweet and juicy fruit along with the texture of the crumble is absolutely delicious. It is always a must to top your crumble or crisp with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

This recipe happens to also be a Gluten Free Apple and Blackberry Crumble that is vegan!

We are an entirely gluten free family, so we made this gluten free. If you’re not gluten free just use regular all purpose flour in place of the gluten free flour.

This recipe also happens to be vegan since I used vegan butter. Not dairy free? Go ahead and use your favorite butter.

For reference our favorite vegan butter is Earth’s Balance and Miyoko’s.

Ingredients needed for Apple and Blackberry Crumble

Ingredients needed to make apple blackberry crumble: Flour, Butter, Brown Sugar, Granulated Sugar, Oats, Blackberries and Apples.

Apples: Typically a honeycrisp or granny smith is used, but I like sweeter apples like Gala or Pink Lady’s when baking.

Blackberries: Fresh and ripe blackberries are the best, but you could use previously frozen berries that are completely thawed.

Gluten Free All Purpose Flour: I use my personal four blend or Better Batter Original or Artisan blend for this, or if you’re not gluten free, regular flour will work too!

Oats: If you are gluten free be sure to verify that they are certified gluten free. Can’t do oats? Use almond meal in place of oats.

Vegan Butter: Or regular butter if you’re not dairy free. Our favorite vegan brands are Earth’s Balance and Miyoko’s.

Brown Sugar: Want to keep this recipe clean? You can always use coconut sugar in place of brown sugar.
