Gluten Free Dairy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
My entire family is obsessed with this recipe. My little sister begs me for these cookies and rummages through my freezer every time she comes over looking for cookie dough. She is not a cook and even makes this recipe if there isn’t any, she’s obsessed.
I have made huge batches of these cookies and taken them to potluck style gatherings. I told no one that they were gluten and dairy free and a huge tray was devoured in a matter of minutes. Nobody questioned them and everyone loved them.
This recipe is one of those gluten free recipes that you can make for everyone and feel 1000% confident that they will love them. I made these cookies live at a gluten free expo in Portland, OR and put them out for everyone to try. I sold books because they wanted those cookies for themselves. Now you get to have the recipe here on the blog!
Gluten Free Dairy Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
I have been making these gluten free dairy free chocolate chip cookies for YEARS! In fact, they are in my first cookbook. they are special and that is why I put them in there. However, they are so darn good that it is time for me to share my gluten free chocolate chip cookies recipe with you!
I make them quite often. I love how this gluten free chocolate chip cookie recipe makes about 3 dozen cookies because I love to freeze the dough. Typically I bake a dozen and then freeze the rest of the dough for later indulging.
What is the best gluten free flour for cookies?
Of course when I talk about gluten free flour I will always recommend my gluten free all purpose flour blend. It has 3 easy to find inexpensive ingredients and makes the best gluten free baked goods.
However, most people who don’t want to blend their own flours are looking for a premade mix and my favorite is Better Batter. That is what I use when baking and they also have an Artisan Blend that is rice free and gum free and that is my go-to for these cookies. If you choose to order Better Batter you can use the code LIVINGFREELYGF and you will get 30% off!

How do I make these gluten free dairy free chocolate chip cookies?
In a stand mixer you will cream the eggs, butter, sugars, and vanilla. You want them to get fluffy so mix on medium/high for about 3 minutes.
Then add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, xanthan gum, and sea salt. Mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes, scraping the bowl half way through.
Add the chocolate chips last and let them blend through. The secret to fluffy perfect cookies is allowing the dough to chill. Set the dough in the fridge for a few hours and then heat the oven to 350ºF. Use a cookie scooper to scoop out the dough and place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake about 14 minutes. You want them golden brown, but still soft in the middle.
They turn out even better when you freeze the dough first. See tips below on freezing it.
Can I freeze these gluten free dairy free chocolate chip cookies?
Yes, you can freeze these gluten free dairy free chocolate chip cookies. If fact I always freeze some of the dough when I make it because they taste better frozen! You will love how these gluten free dairy free chocolate chip cookies taste like toll house cookies when you use the frozen dough!
To freeze the dough take parchment paper that is cut the same size as a freezer bag. I use my cookie scooper to scoop the dough onto the parchment paper and shimmy it into the freezer bag. You can freeze them up to 2-3 months without compromising flavor.
To make the frozen cookie dough simply heat the oven to 350ºF and place the frozen dough right onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 17 minutes. They have a light crisp on the outside, yet they are soft and chewy on the inside.
Which chocolate chips are gluten free?
Most chocolate chips are naturally gluten free. However, there are a few good brands that are made in dedicated facilities and safe for celiacs. My favorite brands for this are Enjoy Life and Guittard .
Are chocolate chips gluten and dairy free?
No, not all chocolate chips are dairy free. In fact a lot of chocolate chips contain milk chocolate, so you must always stay clear of those. Generally semi sweet and dark chips are dairy free, but not all. Typically most chocolate chips are manufactured in a facility with milk, so if your severely allergic to dairy, then stick to Enjoy Life brand.

would you recommend buying the potato starch over the arrowroot powder?
Potato Starch is great and gives awesome texture, but if you prefer arrowroot then use that. I honestly like potato starch better, but arrowroot is a great alternative.
