Easy Gluten-Free Dairy-Free French Toast Recipe

This Easy Gluten-Free Dairy-Free French Toast Recipe with quickly become your go-to. It’s fast to make and always a crowd pleaser! Who doesn’t love a delicious and simple gluten free french toast recipe?

Why is it called French Toast?

Despite its name, French toast is not originally from France. The term “French toast” is believed to have been brought to America by early settlers. In France, it is known as “pain perdu,” meaning lost bread, highlighting its use for repurposing stale or leftover bread.

French Toast is something all Americans know of and I would say, most enjoy. We love it so much that I have come up with many variations and styles such as: French Toast Casserole, Stuffed French Toast, Cinnamon Roll Stuffed French Toast and Peanut Butter and Jelly French Toast Roll Ups.

It’s simple and fast to make, but is truly a treat. The method is even used to make Monte Cristo, so if you are team savory check out my Monte Cristo Slider recipe.

How to Make the Best Gluten Free French Toast Recipe

The most important part of your french toast is going to be the bread you use. If you want to make some thick sliced and decadent french toast, then I suggest baking a loaf of my Sliceable Sandwich Bread. I would recommend that you let it sit on the counter and stale slightly first though because homemade bread is really soft.

When I’m in a hurry my go-to is always Canyon Bakehouse. For sweet recipes I love the Hawaiian Style Bread. Honestly though, any of their loaves will work and taste fabulous.

Another key component is how you spice the egg soak. I use cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla to really bring out that custard flavor.

The best part is even people who aren’t gluten free will still love this recipe (if you’re willing to share!).

Simple Gluten Free French Toast Ingredients

  • Dairy Free Milk: If you’re not dairy free use whole milk. My preferred milk is coconut, but any will work.
  • Eggs: While eggs are not one of our allergens, I know many people do have to avoid eggs. I have not tried this, but I heard you can add a few tbsp of starch to your milk mixture in place of eggs and it works well. Let me know if you try it.
  • Gluten Free Bread: Canyon Bakehouse is my go-to store bought brand, but you could also make my homemade Sandwich Bread Recipe.
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Butter or Oil: I use a total of 4 tbsp for an entire loaf of bread, you could use avocado or coconut oil as well.
  • Toppings: We love syrup, powdered sugar and lots of berries!
