Rice Krispies Treats are beloved by many as a nostalgic treat from their childhood. They are often associated with bake sales, lunchbox snacks, or family gatherings, making them a comforting and familiar treat.

One of the great things about Rice Krispies Treats is that they require no baking. The mixture is simply melted, mixed, and then pressed into a pan to set. It’s a quick and easy dessert option.

Are rice krispies gluten free?

No, they are not! Rice krispie cereal contains malt and it is not safe for those following a gluten-free diet!

Are rice crispy treats gluten free?

Rice Krispies Cereal brand treats are NOT gluten free! However, you can make them homemade with safer ingredients. There are some brands that sell gluten-free rice krispy style treats.

One would think that a rice cereal such as Rice Krispies were gluten free, but in fact they contain malt. So, do not use them if you are celiac or gluten sensitive.

The hardest part of the recipe is scouting for safe cereal. There are several organic rice cereal brands out there, but most often I like buying the store brand brown rice cereal at my local Sprouts. Some of my other go-to brand are…

You betcha. You only need 4 simple ingredients to make these.

all of the ingredients needed to make gluten free rice krispy treats

  • Gluten free rice cereal: This is the most important part because it is vital that your cereal does not contain malt! My go-to brands are the Sprouts Brown Rice Cereal and Nature’s Path Brown Rice Cereal
  • Marshmallows: You can use your favorite brand. We buy Dandies or the Trader Joe’s brand.
  • Coconut oil or vegan (regular) butter
  • Vanilla Extract: This is optional, but really elevates the flavor

Add your marshmallows, we love Dandie marshmallows or the Trader Joe's brand because they do not contain corn and my son has a corn allergy.

If you use coconut oil, there will be a slight coconut flavor. They can also harden more when cooled because coconut oil tends to get very solid when cold.

Here I made them festive for the Holiday’s by taking the mixture after cooking and laying it on a Silicone Baking Mat. I flatten it slightly and then cut out Christmas tree with cookies cutters. I then decorated them with melted chocolate, sprinkles, candy canes and some chocolate candies.

They are fast and easy to make and the kids love decorating them. I am sure Santa would love to eat them too!

Why do my rice crispy treats get hard?

As the oil/butter cools the rice krispy will harden. To avoid this you can use butter or vegan butter (add a little extra) and microwave it for about 5-8 seconds before eating. The microwave will soften it right back up!

Is it Rice Krispy or Rice Krispies?

Technically the cereal and store bought snack bars are Rice Krispies, but either way it works. Tomato, tomato.
