Gluten Free Dairy Free Beef Stroganoff

Gluten free dairy free beef stroganoff is easy to make and delicious. This ground beef stroganoff is a simple hearty meal is perfect for a weeknight meal for the entire family.

Growing up my mother didn’t cook from scratch. We grew up eating the beef stroganoff from the hamburger helper box and I liked it, lol.

As an adult I didn’t really cook from boxes and then once going gluten free and dairy free there was no way I could have anything like that.

The flavors of beef stroganoff are absolutely delicious together and it’s a hearty and satisfying dinner that is perfect for a family.

Stroganoff traditionally is made with steak tips, but we like to keep things simple around here and ground beef is our go-to. It’s easier to find, cheaper and has less prep. Enough said.

It also is made with milk, sour cream and flour. A whole lot of no no’s for us since half of the family is lactose intolerant.

Creating this recipe to be a gluten free dairy free option was actually quite easy once lactose free and plant based sour creams hit the market.

I remember trying to create this recipe back in 2013 and had to make a roux because there were no plant based sour creams available. Once the stores started carrying sour cream, I knew this recipe would be back on and easier than ever.

9. Bring to a light boil, this takes approximately 3 minutes and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Allow the sauce to thicken, this takes about 6-8 minutes.

10. Add the sour cream and stir to combine well.

11. Allow it to simmer for about 3 minutes.

12. Turn off the heat and fold in the pasta. Enjoy!

Notes:

Any oil will work if you do not have avocado oil, I would use olive in its place.

You could sub the beef for turkey as well, but your gravy might not thicken as easily without the extra fat from the meat.

You can use gluten free soy sauce or tamari if you do not have coconut aminos.

Any starch can be used in place of the tapioca, such as corn, potato or arrowroot.

For the sour cream, I like the Follow Your Heart brand for dairy free, or the Green Valley lactose free.

F.A.Q’s

How can I thicken stroganoff without flour?

You either need a flour or starch in order to thicken it the traditional way. You could not use a flour, but you may have a more runny stroganoff.

What can I substitute for milk in stroganoff?

You can used a plant based milk in place of regular milk. I like to use an unsweetened coconut milk, but you can use almond milk, flax milk, or oat milk. Just make sure it is unsweetened.

Does beef stroganoff contain gluten?

Traditional beef stroganoff contains gluten. In order to make sure your beef stroganoff is gluten-free you will need to make it from scratch, or make sure that whatever pre-made items your purchasing are certified gluten free.
