My trip to San Jose Del Cabo

My Husband and I took our first trip out of the Country to San Jose Del Cabo to celebrate our 10 year anniversary! It was for 3 days and 2 nights and definitly was not enough!! Next time around we will wait until the kids are a little older so we can stay atleast 5 nights but little Claire was only 5 months at the time so I didn’t want to be gone for too long.

I found some deals and I had booked an amazing hotel. Unfortunatley a few weeks before the depature Mexico had horrible hurricanes and the hotel we were going to stay at had to be repaired. I settled for a different hotel but was not very happy with it in the end.

Before I book a trip I do my homework to make sure that I will be able to eat while we are there. My first hotel choice seemed to be able to accomodate that. My second hotel choice assured me that they could work around it.

We stayed at the Barcelo Grand Faro and I made some major food mistakes. First of all- I did not ask enough questions. Sometimes I make this mistake and I should know better by now. I have been gluten free for almost 4 years now and this is a dumb mistake on my behalf. Gluten hides in freaking everything and something as simple as a cocktail even though I choose the correct liquor can still somehow contain it and I believe that was the culprit of the trip.

We started our trip looking for safe food. Having an all inclusive resort is amazing but for a food allergy sufferer it wasn’t so great. There were several areas to get food and the second one had a larger selection but as scared as I was I stuck to steamed naked vegetables and a green salad that I poured some vinegar and olive oil on. I knew that was not the culpret. Then we started ordering margaritas. White agave ones of course! I had probably 4 that night. I was fine. Then we went to dinner and like an IDIOT I didn’t tell the waiter about my allergy. I navigated the menu like I normally would and chose the meal that looked naturally gluten free. I drank wine and then we went to the sky bar and ordered mojitos.

At this point I was pretty drunk and we went back to our hotel and ordered room service (all inclusive baby!) I made a few more mistakes and ordered a steak and fries. The steak was amazing but who knows what it was cooked in. I’m sure the fries were cooked in the same oil as other stuff but I usually am ok with that.

Well, about 3 am I woke up so ill that I was up for hours. UGH! After my body seemed to rid itself of the gluten I felt better. I had eggs and fruit and cottage cheese and was starting to feel better. We went to the beach and then I snacked on a taco and some cheese and salad. Then like an idiot I had another margarita. I was sick for the rest of the day after that and ended up sick on and off. Totally ruined my trip!

What I learned:

1) Shots are the way to go! Once I figured out the problem I only drank champagne and white agave tequila shots with soda water and lime.

2) Ask more questions! Spend more on a resort that has a track record for handling food allergies like a champ!

3) Pack emergency food, imodium and anything else that helps calm your tummy.

4) Buy some gingerale to keep in the hotel room

5) Coctails hide gluten! You could always buy some lemon or limeade and order shots of white agave tequila and just mix it yourself to make a margarita.
