Healthy Trail Mix

Healthy Trail Mix is that simple grab-and-go snack that you should always have on hand. I love a good trail mix because I can customize it to whatever I am feeling at the moment. Sweet, savory, and everything in-between. Trail mix is that healthy go-to that never fails.

When you have food allergies and restrictions you need to have a handful of simple, yet healthy snacks that you can grab when you need them. Listening to your body is so incredibly important. It is something that a lot of us do not do. However, when you start your healthy journey it is something you begin to do and you also realize how much you may have neglected it before.

Before going gluten free the symptoms were overwhelming, there were so many I was suffering from all at the same time that I could never pin point just one. It was 15 different things, all day everyday, that usually resulted in extreme fatigue. The Gluten Free RN Nadine talks in her book, Dough Nation: A Nurse’s Memoir of Celiac Disease from Missed Diagnosis to Food and Health Activism, about how once your skin is having symptoms, it means all the issues have surfaced.

The Herpetiformis Dermatitis was the symptom that finally brought me to changing my entire diet and lifestyle. The diarrhea, fatigue, migraines, bloat, etc. had become symptoms I tolerated and learned how to live with. The dermatitis however, had reached its peak and could not be handled.

The topical steroids helped for a while, but eventually stopped having their positive effect. When I took my health into my own hands (because the doctors told me I was a nut job), I found that Herpetiformis Dermatitis was a common symptom of a gluten allergy. When I researched gluten allergies and had every single symptom, I realized that I had to make big changes.

Part of those changes are being prepared at all times. I never know when I am going to need to eat and not be able to. So, when I am running errands, or taking a day trip and even traveling- being prepared is key! Carrying a small snack bag in the car is always a good idea, but having at minimum a Larabar and some of this Healthy Trail Mix is a necessity.

Healthy Trail Mix- Grain Free & Paleo

Making your own trail mix could not be easier. Whatever your in the mood for at the moment goes! My favorite nuts are Macadamia, Pistachios, and Cashews. You can keep this paleo by avoiding peanuts and making sure that your dried fruit does not have sugar added to it. I am obsessed with dried cherries, so of course those were used along with some cranberries. If you can find paleo chocolate chips, or Cacao Nibs , then add those babies in.

You truly can not go wrong with this recipe and I know you will love grabbing it by the handful as much as I do! Happy healthy snacking!
