Gluten Free Sunscreens

Last year I was diagnosed with skin cancer. It was scary, but I honestly wasn’t incredibly surprised. With red hair and incredibly fair skin the sun has never been my friend. However, I do live in sunny California and avoiding the sun is simply not an option.

Using sunscreen is something I didn’t do as much as I should have when I was younger. I was the only fair skinned one in my immediate family and purchasing sun screen wasn’t a priority. As an adult I make sunscreen a priority and because of that I have tried many brands of gluten free sunscreen.

In this blog post I will provide you with my personal favorite gluten free sunscreen, but I will also let you know what sunscreens are gluten free. Here is a list of product ingredients you need to look for to avoid gluten in sunscreen.

Gluten In Sunscreen

Is Banana Boat gluten free?

I reached out to Banana Boat and here is what they sent me…

All of our sun care products undergo appropriate and rigorous testing to ensure they are properly labeled and meet all relevant Banana Boat regulations. You can feel confident using our products for safe and effective sun protection, when applied as directed by the product labels.

The ingredients in our products are disclosed on the labels using ingredient names assigned by experts and recognized by governments around the world.

We do not add to our products common food allergens such as tree nuts, peanuts, eggs, soy, wheat, fish, dairy, or gluten. Nonetheless, we recommend that consumers always read the label and check the list of ingredients.  We also suggest consumers carefully test the product before use or consult their physician in advance if concerned about the possibility of sensitivity to certain ingredients.

If we can be of further assistance, you can reach us at 1-800-723-3786, Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 6 pm Eastern Time.

So, what I would take from that is if none of the ingredients listed above are present, then this should be safe, but they are not claiming anything.

Is Blue Lizard gluten free?

Per https://bluelizardsunscreen.com/pages/faqs Blue Lizard products do not contain gluten.

Is Coppertone sport sunscreen gluten free?

I have reached out to Coppertone and I am currently waiting to find out if Coppertone sport sunscreens are gluten free.

Is Thinkbaby sunscreen gluten free?

Some, or should I say most Thinkbaby brand sunscreens are safe. I looked over all of the products and below are the ones I found to be safe and labeled by the company as gluten free.

Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen- The website states that is in fact gluten free. I will assume the vegetable glycerin and tocopherols are derived from other plant based materials.  This is the tube not the stick. The stick does not state gluten free.

ThinkSport Kids Safe Sunscreen SPF 50+ (tube, not stick)- The website states this is gluten free. It does however contain vegetable glycerin and tocopherols. Since the website states gluten free, I will assume that this is derived from something other than wheat or gluten.

ThinkSport Safe Sunscreen 50+ for adults (tube, not stick)- The website states this is gluten free.

ThinkSun Everyday Face Sunscreen- The website states this is gluten free

None of the sunscreen sticks stated gluten free. I emailed the company and I am waiting to hear back.

My favorite gluten free sunscreen

Hempz Yuzu and Starfruit- This daily gradual tan lotion also has an SPF in it which makes it the perfect lotion to use everyday. I love this stuff!

Sunbum- All of the Sunbum products are gluten free and vegan. There affordable and effective. You can find their products in many different stores and its always a go-to for me.
