Gluten Free Monte Cristo Sandwich

Monte Cristo Sandwiches are something I had heard so many good things about. In fact my Mom and Aunt raved about them. Since they loved it so much I knew I needed to create a gluten free Monte Cristo sandwich to enjoy. This in my opinion is the best Monte Cristo sandwich that is gluten free, dairy free, fun and easy to make!

However, after my son had to cut the majority of corn out of his diet I went searching for a gluten free waffle that he would love. We bought all of the ones available and Van’s was hands down his absolute favorite. It was surprising that he ventured out and tried the blueberry and loved them! These light and crisp waffles contain 21-23g of whole grains per serving, so I know their bellies will be full and happy. As busy parents we need snacks and simple breakfasts for the kids (and ourselves) and that is why you will always find a large assortment of Van’s products in our home. Van’s is our brand of choice because they offer gluten, dairy, corn, and nut free options- those are all of the intolerance/allergies/sensitivities we have in our home. What is a Monte Cristo Sandwich made of?

This is an age old question no one seems to have an answer to. The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel, but seems to have no connection to this Americanized sandwich. This is basically a French toast ham and cheese sandwich that has been found in American cookbooks as early as the 1930’s.
monte cristo ingredients on a table   Generally it is filled with ham, cheese, and a layer of mayonnaise. The outside is coated like French toast and you can dust it with powdered sugar if you would like. I wanted a savory spin on this for lunch or dinner, but if you’re looking for a breakfast or brunch recipe add a light dusting of the powdered sugar on top. Here are the ingredients…

  • Van’s Gluten Free Original Waffles
  • Ham
  • Cheese (I used vegan gouda)
  • Mayo
  • Eggs
  • Coconut milk (or milk of choice)
  • Few spices

How do we make the best Monte Cristo sandwich?

monte cristo process shots  Start by toasting the waffles. Get them nice and crispy. The crispier they are the better they hold up when cooking. In a shallow bowl or pie dish add the eggs, milk and seasonings. Beat well with a fork. Add the mayo on both sides of the waffle. monte cristo process shots   Build the sandwich by layering the cheese and ham and then putting the waffles together. Allow the waffle sandwich to soak in the egg mixture for about 15-30 seconds. Not too long, or it will get a bit soggy. Melt 1 tbsp of the butter in an 8 inch frying pan. Once the butter is melted add the sandwich.

Once done transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to soak up the excess butter/oil. You can add a dusting of powdered sugar if you would like to. I prefer this on the savory side. Enjoy!
