Easy Mojito Recipe

This incredibly light and refreshing mint mojito recipe is my favorite easy mojito recipe. In this post I will show you how to make a mojito from scratch, give you all the mojito ingredients, tell you the best rum for mojitos and answer questions like, are mojitos gluten free and is rum gluten free.

I had my first mint mojito in mexico when my husband and I went for a long weekend to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Instantly, I was in love with this drink.

Easy Mojito Recipe

Mint is one of my favorite scents and flavors. When I had my first garden, mint was something I started growing. Mint is an easy plant to grow and it smells heavenly.

It’s also a natural insect repellent, so I love having it in large pots all over the patio.

It’s the time of year here in California where its warm, very sunny, and the mint is flourishing. Last week when I checked my gorgeous mint plants I knew it was time to start trimming and making my favorite mint mojito recipe.

But before I tell you how to make a mojito from scratch, there are important questions I need to address. What is a mint mojito?  Are mojitos gluten free? Is rum gluten free?

What is a Mint Mojito?

A mint mojito is typically made up of ice, fresh mint sprigs, lime juice, club soda, simple syrup and rum.

You can take a mojito to an entirely different level by adding your favorite flavors to these ingredients such as strawberries, ginger, cucumber, and melon.

Mojitos are always served ice cold with most of your glass being full of ice. I prefer the cleanest ingredients with all of my recipes so I made a few swaps, such as using agave nectar instead of simple syrup.

This swap also makes the drink lower in calories.

Is rum gluten free?

Rum should naturally be gluten free. Does that mean every rum will be? No, because companies love to take short cuts and use crap that is cheap.

However, real rum is made from sugar cane. So, look for a sugar cane based rum and you should be safe.

What is the best rum for mojitos?

Typically light rum is recommended for mojitos. However, I find that dark rums taste better and are higher quality.

Most Bacardi rums are gf, but not Bacardi silver. Captain Morgans is gluten free, and any real pure rum should be. Always check labels and do your research.

Personally, Mount Gay rum is my favorite. It’s smooth, pure, and easy to find.

Are mojitos gluten free?

If you use gluten free rum and make sure to use a safe sweetener instead of a premade mixer then you should be good to go. The mojito ingredients in this easy mojito recipe are all naturally gluten free and there’s no junk.

How do you make a mojito from scratch?

It’s sooo simple. Get all of your ingredients together. If you are making more than one then double and triple as needed.

You will need…

  • Fresh mint sprigs. You can buy a small mint plant at most grocery stores right now and they are the same cost as getting cut mint in the produce. You can even replant these and grow them in a pot!
  • Limes
  • Ice
  • High quality rum
  • Agave or simple syrup
  • Sparkling lime flavored water or mineral water

Start by muddling the mint. You can use whatever you have on hand to press down and gently move side to side. Do not over muddle this can make the drink taste a little bland. A gentle muddle will do.

Drop the mint on the bottom of your glass. Fill the glass will a few slices of lime and then fill the cup up almost to the rim with ice.

Pour the agave, lime juice, and rum in the cup. Then pour the sparkling water until the glass is full. Add more mint to the top and give it a good stir. The liquor and agave tend to sink and need to be mixed up a bit. Enjoy ice cold!

Easy Mojito Recipe

This simple mint mojito recipe is gluten free and dairy free

Ingredients

  • 3 sprigs mint
  • 1 lime 1/2 squeezed and the other half sliced or quartered
  • 1 tbsp agave nectar
  • 2 tbsp rum
  • 1/2 cup sparkling water preferably lime flavored

Instructions

  1. Start by muddling 2 sprigs of the mint. Do not over muddle, this can make the drink taste a little bland. A gentle muddle will do. 

  2. Drop the mint to the bottom of your cup. Add the sliced lime.

  3. Fill the cup with ice.

  4. Pour the lime juice, agave nectar, and rum over the ice. Top with sparkling water until the glass in full.

  5. Add an additional sprig of mint on top for garnish. Stir and serve.
