Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • ½ onion finely diced
  • 1 carrot finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 1 green bell pepper finely diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mustard
  • 2 tablespoons gluten free tamari
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, carrot, garlic and green bell pepper and sauté for 4 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until browned and cooked through. Do not drain.
  • While the meat is cooking, combine the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar or coconut sugar, ground mustard, gluten free tamari, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper in a bowl. Stir until well combined.
  • Pour the sauce into the skillet with the cooked meat and vegetables and stir to combine.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes.
  • Serve on your favorite gluten-free hamburger buns.

Notes

Ground Meat: Ground beef is my preference, but I've also made this recipe with ground turkey. You can use all beef, all turkey, a combination of the two or ground chicken.
Sugar: Brown sugar and coconut sugar both work in this recipe.
Tamari: Coconut aminos can be substituted for the gluten free tamari. Tamari is saltier, so taste the finished sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed when using coconut aminos.
Ketchup: Use your favorite ketchup. Always check labels to make sure the ingredients meet your dietary needs.
Storage: Store leftover Sloppy Joe filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. I reheat mine on the stovetop.
Freezing: The cooked filling can be frozen in an airtight freezer-safe container or freezer bag. For best quality, use within about 3 months.
