How to Heal Your Skin Naturally

I recently met Prettyrooted in one of my social groups. I resonated with her message immediately and quickly became a fan. Recently, she did a live video on Instagram about how to heal your skin naturally. She talked about what she had been suffering from and then a new natural approach she took to heal it. As you will see below, her transformation is unbelievable. When I watched this video I was immediately interested, as I have been suffering from cystic acne on and off now for a year. I have been desperate and her video couldn’t have come at a better time. I had recently done a microderm peel that I left on for too long and it burnt my face. I needed some help and her advice is truly helpful.

Since she does not have a blog and there really wasn’t a reference on writing for all of her suggestions- I reached out and asked her to write a guest post. With my readers being primarily women, I felt her story would also resonate with all of you. Please head over to Instagram and follow her. Maybe if I am lucky I can talk her into doing a live video for us. So, here is her post about how to heal your skin naturally.

This was my skin and GIRL, it was not pretty!! I work from home so thankfully I did not have to see people face to face. Even though I wasn’t surrounded by people…I saw it, I looked at it constantly and was really in a bad spot mentally. I cried every single day because of my skin. Not only did it look bad, it felt bad…it was SO painful. I had just made a major switch in my diet to help with my asthma, I cut out all inflammatory foods like dairy and grains to try and reduce my attacks. So here I am, doing all this good for my body and it felt like my skin HATED me for it. On the rare occasion my husband and I did go out, I would have to cake on the foundation which drew more attention to my face. It looked atrocious.

So here’s the mistakes I made before I fixed it…

I literally washed my face 4 times a day, no joke. I used scolding hot water and a washcloth and legit scrubbed my face until it was raw. I know, I know, I was told by EVERYONE that this was so bad. I thought the hotter the water, the more germs I was killing and the harder I rubbed, the more I was exfoliating the acne off my face. Now, my husband is going to just love reading this next part… He actually came up to me in the bathroom one evening while I was doing this heinous routine of washing/scrubbing my face and said, “why don’t you just try a gentler approach? You eat so well and treat the inner you so kindly, but you abuse your beautiful face”. So, this is exactly what I did next. I started researching essential oils and herbs for acne to take a natural approach. Now, I’m not going to lie, I did seek out a dermatologist for their opinion. They wanted to put me on Clindamycin which I refused (make your own decision, but I refused to take this after reading the side effects of this medication). I did however start with a vitamin A that kick started the process to reduce some of the bumps. So, after a week or so of taking the vitamin A, I stopped, then started to incorporate and add these remedies below.

I added these steps in one at a time, using them for a few days to make sure I did not react before adding on the next herb or essential oil. Below is a rough guide to what I did.

CLEANSING:
1. Remove make up with Coconut Oil.
2. Cleanse face with “SIMPLE” hydrating face wash.
3. Moist cotton ball with “Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar” and swipe gently over face like you would a toner and let dry (no need to rinse).
*If you find the vinegar is too hard, you can instead do 1 drop of tea tree oil with witch hazel on a cotton ball and use like you would a toner. Keep in mind tea tree oil can be very drying which can make acne worse so only use 1 drop*

MOISTURIZING:
Combine 1-2 drops of either frankincense oil (natural astringent), lavender oil (natural antimicrobial) or tea tree oil (natural antiseptic) with carrier oil (like coconut oil) or oil-free moisturizer (make sure to choose one marked no higher than a level 3 on “Think Dirty” or “EWG”.

MASKING:
Create paste/mask by mixing 3 tbsp. of Manuka Honey, 1 tbsp. of cinnamon, and 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar. Apply to face and leave on for 10 minutes to start and you can increase as you go. VERY IMPORTANT! Rinse with cool water when you are done. Your face will be red and hot, but its normal (the cinnamon helps with killing bacteria and promotes cell turnover while the honey is naturally antibacterial).

Create paste/mask by mixing 1 tsp of Turmeric , 1 tbsp. Manuka Honey and let sit for 20-30 minutes (turmeric and honey help reduce inflammation and can help reduce scarring).

I went into this knowing that going the natural route was going to take a lot longer than taking a prescription. I was completely okay knowing this was not going to give me overnight results, but I felt more at ease knowing it was safer and that I was not going to suffer more serious side effects. Good skin takes time! So, don’t be discouraged if it takes you a few months to see results (it took me 3 months). I still see a few pimples now and again, but that is normal! My advice is to stick with it, don’t get down after a week and stop.

So naturally after the acne died down, I noticed a lot of scarring. To address my scars, I continue to use this regimen on a regular basis. After the cleansing step, I will either do the turmeric mask, or I have recently started using the “Turmeric stick” from Cocokind, which is a whole lot more convenient! I will rinse, soak, and cotton pad with the apple cider vinegar to get the remaining turmeric tint off (turmeric has a tendency to stain everything and the vinegar really helps to break up the pigment the turmeric leaves behind) and then put on the “Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum”.
